#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today.

Sunday paper today with the magazine section, however it is a slow news day and there is very little new news of the war.

  • British airmen cross the Channel in force [Crossing the English Channel by aeroplane is still a notable event, and a large number of aeroplanes flying together would have been a major event, but war-time censorship keeps the story minimal]
  • A bag of 62,000 German dog-tags arrives in Brussels [which is the German advance headquarters at this point. Stop for a second and think about that... 62,000 men dead. That's roughly the population of Nanaimo.]
  • New dry-dock facility approved for Vancouver.
  • Fatal shooting at Sikh Temple in Vancouver.
  • New casualty list of British officers killed, wounded or missing.\240
  • Two-page reprint of a relief map of Europe
  • A summary of current events in the children's section [at a reading level that today would be TL;DR for most people. I've included its entirety since it is a good summary of most of the things I have picked out so far.]

And on the lighter side of things:

  • A cute poem "The Brave Little Girl" also from the children's section.
  • Tomorrow will have been Labour Day in 1914. There are lots of advertisements for fall fashions and home decor, many with beautiful illustrations. I've picked out several.\240
