#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:

  • Half page ad for subscriptions. [Note the phone number for subscriptions: 12. Interestingly the "general inquiry" line listed on the front page is 11... a number they still have although now it has eight more digits in front of it: 604-380-5211. Another number of note is the editor's phone: 1\240-- Victoria's first phone line -- and also a number that is still in service as 604-380-5201.]
  • Trench warfare becoming more, well, entrenched. "The countryside along the Aisine [river] is a vast military rabbit warren."
  • Canada to double the number of soldiers it has overseas.
  • Nine Austrians captured trying to flee Canada and held as prisoners of war [this is the beginnings of the Ukrainian Internment. "Prisoners of war" like this, who are mostly just unnaturalized immigrants who cannot get citizenship because that avenue has been closed, will end up in concentration camps and performing slave labour doing things like building Banff nation park.]
  • 1/4 page add for Russell Cars [the short-lived auto division of CCM] that I liked.
