On May 25 I was on Bad Vibes on CFRO (you can listen to it here.) Marc Godfrey and I were picking from a list of music that I brought with me depending on how the conversation went. I came armed with almost three hours of music for a one hour interview, with everything picked for a reason. This is the second in a series of posts where I run through those choices, including the ones that we didn't get to, and talk about why I picked them.

TitleSheena's in a Goth Gang
Album (Year)Big Beat from Badsville (1997)

This is a 1997 homage to the Ramones' 1977 song, Sheena is a Punk Rocker that for me is a recognition that many old school goths came into it from a punk background, and that goth itself is an offshoot of punk. For example, Sid Vicious drummed for Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Severin at their first live concert before they became Siouxsie and the Banshees. Robert Smtih said, speaking about playing with Siouxsie and the Banhees on tour in 1979 in a 2003 interview Siouxsie & the Banshees: The Authorised Biography by Mark Paytress, "On stage that first night with the Banshees, I was blown away by how powerful I felt playing that kind of music. It was so different to what we were doing with The Cure. Before that, I'd wanted us to be like the Buzzcocks or Elvis Costello, the punk Beatles. Being a Banshee really changed my attitude to what I was doing."
