#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today.

"Battle Front Quiet for Day" is the lead headline and the triple trend over the last few days of not disguising the horrors, front-page features of German atrocities, and an American spin on stories continues what appears to be a propaganda push aimed directly at the United States.

  • List of British officers killed and wounded is published as well as total numbers of killed, wounded and missing.
  • Front-page article noting how "Calm, methodical, undemonstrative" Britons are incensed, with an unsubtle subtext that if they are, we should be, too.
  • Front-page article about the Germans ignoring the white flag and killing civilians
  • France moves government and banking offices from Paris to Bordeaux. Special note is made of the American Ambassador.
  • The Vancouver Exhibition [now known as the PNE] opened yesterday, with the Governor General flipping a switch in Ottawa, as previously reported\240he would.
  • The new Pope is elected, takes the name Benedict XV.
  • The board of directors of the Cowichan Fall Fair decides the fair will be held as usual.
  • Mrs. Winston Churchill is featured in the Women's section. Winston Churchill is currently First Lord of the Admiralty [essentially chairman of the board of governors of the British navy, a political rather than a miliary title]
