#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today.

A lousy scan today. No big developments in the war that I could see, anyway, but a couple of interesting tidbits nonetheless:

  • Man voted out of the Vancouver Board of Trade 198-2 for being liking the United States better than Canada [shame we cant kick Harper out of Ottawa for this same attitude.]
  • Utterly bizarre ad trying to sell\240Budwieser to Canadians by praising Hungarians, who happen to the the enemy at the moment. This is even weirder than the sad attempt to connect Budwieser\240with the British naval hero Lord Nelson a few weeks ago.\240

#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today.

Antwerp is the big news today. The Germans have been attacking the outer defences for days now. Refugees from surrounding villages have been streaming into the city and also trying to escape north to the Netherlands. My maternal grandparents are living through this, my grandmother would have been 10 and my grandfather 14 at the time.

  • Front page has pictures of Antwerp. To right image is four blocks away from where my grandfather will be working 25 years later, when the Germans invade again. He was 14 in 1914 and in 1939 will become involved in the Resistance.\240
  • Long article on the hardships being experienced in Belgium. Reproduced in 5 sections.
  • [Some of the unbelievable casual nationalism/racism from 100 years ago] Deposed\240Sultan of Morocco says Germans are even, to paraphrase, "Worse than us [Moors]."
  • A letter recounts horrors in Belgium reprinted [and reproduced here in three parts]
  • Speculation the Newfoundland and Bermuda my join Canadian confederation after the war [of course, it will take another war and Newfoundland won't be part of Canada until 1949, and Bermuda is still a British Overseas Territory still under the direct authority of the U.K., what until 1983 was called a "Crown Colony".]
