here's one a friend of mine sent me today. i'm amazed by how striking the contrast of the blackout is here, as compared to the regional photos i'd thus far seen:
It's a fake. I know because I did exactly the same thing (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mbarrick/415170.html) form the same source map, only I did it better - at least I colour-matched the ground.
The person who did this one also neglected to black out the rest of southern Ontario, and if you compare to the real images they made the same mistake I did by blacking out too much of New Jersey. The other indication that this is a huge fake is that at 23:15 EST it would still be light here on the west coast, and being summer, the far north would be light no matter what time it was taken.
The map used is from a composite from NASA you can get here (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap001127.html)
oh that is too funny! they also forgot to blacken out Detroit, and i totally missed the timestamp, as by that time we had power restored by then, as well as many other areas.
you know, i have to say that my inner gut told me that the black out region in this image was "too black", by virtue of common sense as well as because i know there were isolated places that retained power because there were a few small power plants that weren't affected. then of course had i have bothered to look at the timestamp, i would have seen it was a hoax.
hah, guess i should start listening to myself more! ;)
