Nearly a year later

The fire was October 18th last year. For the first time since then people will be living on the 4th floor again come this October. Nick and Sandi's old place, the one beside it and the south-east corner suite have been rented. The people who are moving into the southeast corner suite on the 4th floor originally put their deposit down to move in last November, just before the fire. They have waited this long to take the apartment. That, I think, really says something about how special this building is.

The new hardwood flooring which, while very good by contemporary standards, blows compared to the 90-year old inlayed stuff that's mostly been lost. At this point it isn't varnished, which does improve it. But nobody does inlay anymore and there is no way to fake 90 years of patina.

And then there is the fourth floor, where the fire actually took place. Looking around this afternoon I was surprised by how much actually has been salvaged, considering how badly damaged everything was.

The new toilets that are replacing all the old ones. Note the column-like detail of the base. Apparently the sinks will also have a column base, but they aren't in place yet.

The new lights being used above the bathroom mirrors. Out apartment doesn't have there - I'm hoping we can get them put in.

I actually just linked in from Leaf's Journal and I have been reading your comments for a long time now in various journals. (3 degrees of separation. Screw the 6;-P) and just wanted to say great pictures. I remember briefly reading about the fire a long while ago. That's an amazing transformation!

Wow they did a good job - well atleast it looks alot better, got a twinge of homesickness - but just a twinge.
