I saw a job posting today for a position in Dubai Internet City that I am qualified for and the bizarreness of it (and tax-free income) had me intrigued for a minute. But I wouldn't last 15 minutes in a country where a "cold day" is in the mid-20's C and it can get as hot as 48 °C in the summer, let alone the fact that Elaine and I would horribly not mesh with the culture. I'd live somewhere like that for a year if it meant making enough money to retire, but since I'm not likely to get a seven-figure salary, I think I'll let this one go ;-)

Yeah, although the proximity to Cairo (and thus ancient Egyptian architecture) is enough to make me drool. My uncle Al was posted there for a year, and he loved it. But then again he doesn't mind being stupidly overheated. He did say it was an incredible city though.

Dubai is not like the rest of the Arab world, it is much more like Turkey, a friend of mine in Montreal from Dubia told me about how the BARS are open until 4am and that people drink hard there, women don't veil and it is much more European.

UAE

I thought the UAE practised the same sect of Islam as found across the border in Saudi Arabia?

From what I have heard, it may indeed be *liberal* for the Persian Gulf (compared to Saudi Arabia or Iran) but it's still a very conservative society compared to either Turkey or the West. Westerners are still hindered to find food during Ramadan.

my comment is not based on any research, only talking about "what it is like back home" with a guy I was friends with at work, when I worked in Montreal.
