#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today.

News from the European fronts continues to be more of the same. The Germans are in retreat and the Austrians are in disarray. Most of the news is about the German push toward Paris being a failure, but no real details and virtually nothing new since yesterday.

  • Austrians have reduced their draft age from 23 to 20, ordering men born in 1894 or earlier to enlist.\240
  • Canadian calvary units to be deployed.
  • Cost of the war for Great Britain to date reported to be about $166,500,000 [presumably in CAD, equivalent to about $450-billion in 2014 Canadian dollars]
  • Five tons of gold quietly delivered to Ottawa [Roughly $45-million CAD worth at today's prices]
  • Bills regarding Irish independence and the disestablishment of the Church of England in Wales are officially postponed until after the war [topical on the eve of tomorrow's (2014) vote on Scottish independence]
  • Registration of Germans and Austro-Hungarians continues. Notices to register expanded to other municipalities.
  • Ad for new "Edison Diamond Disc" phonograph [i.e. 78 rpm records, new technology replacing recording cylinders]
