#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:

Even the paper is bored of the lack of substantive news from the Western front, "War Summary on Usual Line" reads the headline, so naturally the paper is full of interesting things...

  • Germans characterised as looters and brigands, and the stench goes right to the top with another anecdote of Crown Prince Wilhelm\240looting another French aristocrat's home.
  • English thieves, however, are showing great patriotism, with crime down 40% in London.
  • Canadian troops arrive in England
  • Fear of Zeppelin attacks belittled, "Just why people should suddenly decide that there is danger is not clear,..."
  • Mexican Civil War fighting spills over into Arizona
  • Japanese advances against German territories. Japan assures the United States it has no imperial designs as territory near the Philippines is taken. The government of China protests Japanese encroachment and treatment of locals. [Those who know history, or just have an astute eye, will recognize this as the seeds of the Pacific theatre conflicts of WWII.]
  • Moscow Ballet School\240alumni\240performing at the Pantages Theatre in Victoria.
  • Another celebrity endorsement of Bovril by Ernest Shackleton, this time with a map of Antarctica [and as Africa is a distant land of science fictions adventures equivalent to the moon, Antarctica is Mars.]
  • \240An ad for a state-of-the-art [coal fire] oven to cook your Thanksgiving turkey in.
