#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:

  • Map of the Russian front featured prominently on the front page, but most of the stories are about Antwerp.
  • "Antwerp Gets Usual Orders" - food to be provided to Germans by locals at no cost, must salute German flag and German troops, etc.. Other articles speculate on German plans for western Belgium, the threat to England, use of the Scheldt River as a supply line, etc.
  • Canadian training and staging area in England established on Salisbury Plain
  • Germans reported to be producing heavy guns with an unprecedented range of 25 miles (40 Km). It's not reported but that is more than enough to hit Dover from Calais and the Germans are pushing down the coast from Antwerp in that direction. Massive number of airships and aeroplanes are also being produced. An attack on England is being strongly implied.
  • Boston Braves win the World Series. [Now the Atlanta Braves, via Milaukee. This was their "Miracle Season" - still a big deal for baseball fans.]
  • And in local news, pod of "blackfish" [killer whales / orcas] spoil sport fishing for most of the day in the Saanich Arm by scaring off all the salmon.\240
