#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:\240

  • Estimated the 150,000 Belgian refugees are now in England
  • German reconnaissance aeroplane downed over Ostend. "Allies are becoming skilled in winging aeroplanes."
  • It is suggested that London's art treasures be moved to safer locations to protect them from possible raids by airships.
  • Canadian troops arriving in Plymouth
  • Seventy-five or so men from Vancouver and twenty-five from Victoria currently training in Victoria to serve in Bermuda.
  • If it were not for the war, this would be huge news: first British ships arriving in U.K. from the west coast via the Panama Canal.\240
  • \240Panama canal currently closed do to landslide. Chief engineer Colonel Goethals cannot say how long it will take to clear and reopen the canal.
  • Boston considering starting a professional hockey team [It'll be another ten years before the Boston Bruins are started since the NHA will disband in 1915 and there will be no NHL until 1917. The NHL won't expand into the U.S. until 1924, with the Bruins being the first U.S. team.]
