#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:

  • Inquest reveals hospital ship Rohilla that floundered off the Yorkshire coast on the night before Hallowe'en (reported on Hallowe'en) struck a mine and was intentionally run onto the rocks as desperate option slightly better than sinking at sea.
  • An Italian priest demonstrates his invention of a portable radio receiver capable of receiving radio signals from over a thousand miles away.
  • Spies and more spies: former interpreter for the Department of Immigration caught with a radio transmitter in Halifax, and a German officer caught in Cairo with plans to dynamite the Suez Canal [and I find the sudden upswing in reporting on German spies suspiciously coincides with programme to register and intern "enemy aliens" having just been appointed a commander.]
  • British aviators crash and burn, literally. One burns to death on a test flight and another crashes into the Canadian camp on Salisbury Plain and dies of his injuries.
  • Negotiations for a reciprocal trade agreement with Australia going well.
  • Vote is now final in Washington, prohibition carries. Prohibition also very likely to carry in Oregon.
  • Britain and France officially declare\240war on the Ottoman Empire.
