The lighting works because the black is in shadow and the lighter horse is well lit and highlighted by the natural lighting. Also even though the black horse is in focus the attention is on the light horse. there is also and energy flow in that makes it look like the light horse is chasing the dark horse.

Your other comment got me thinking about this again, and this one just confirms it: the way I create images has a great deal to do with the way I see things. I'm remarkably nearsighted and have no depth perception. Focus is a feature of the images, but, as is the case with this image and the one you panned, what is focal in the image is not what is *in* focus. I don't see depth even IRL so in compositions I tend not to consider it as part of the composition in a conventional way, all I "see" is the colour and shape. What you get in these pictures is what I would have seen peeking around these horses as a three-year old. In #1 I'm looking at the birdhouse, in #2, the tree, and in this one, as you've noticed, the other horse.
I agree that this one, and the 4th one that I am about to post, are more successful at presenting my perception of the world than the first two.
