Canada PM Links Sept. 11 to 'Arrogant' West
By David Ljunggren

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, going where few other leaders dare to tread, has linked the Sept. 11 suicide attacks to the perceived arrogance and selfishness of the United States and the West.

Chretien is the first head of a western major nation to suggest that the suicide hijackers might have been motivated by what he describes as the misguided policies of a rich and powerful West that did not understand the need for restraint.

no kidding, i totally agree, this is the best thing i have heard anyone in power say, and it's about freaking time us canadians stood up against americans, especially with the sumas powerstation, lumber tarrifs and other situations where america has just decided to use its power to keep itself ahead, and ignore the potential side effects on other countries. YaY for us!

I've suggested this, but have been met with nothing but accusations of being "un-patriotic."

Not.
I am sure the U.S. brought much of this on its own head. I love my country, but I fear my gov't.

you have to love our leaders...first trudeau with his salute...now jean with his own...as old and cantankerous as he may be at least he has the guts to say something that everyone is thinking, and reflects a great deal of his own country's sentiments...i'll have to toast jean tonight with my beer, whilst i'm kicking [livejournal.com profile] thetroll's ass at foosball...stick it to the man jean!!!

you know it's interesting that the "alliance" automatically derided the prime minister's comments saying they should be apologized for...

b>This did little to assuage the anger of the right-wing Canadian Alliance party, which is generally more favorably inclined toward the United States.
"These comments should be apologized for. They're completely out of context and this is just the very worst timing," deputy Alliance leader Grant Hill told Reuters.
"There is no excuse for terrorism. There is no excuse for innocent lives being lost and anyone who says there is an excuse for that is wrong...it's not clever at all, it's an insult to our neighbors."

yet many callers in ottawa supported the pm's position, and i feel many canadians period...it just shows how out of touch the "alliance" is with real canadians, and why they'll never make it into power...

Fuck the Alliance

Clearly they don't know the difference between an excuse and an explaination, either. Bunch of self-serving, creationist, racist, ignorant prigs.

so very true, but what would you expect of them??? because we couldn't be responsible for anything which happens to us...geez in clinical terms wouldn't that make us delusional and a candidate for therapy??? too funny...

one other note, that interview was taped in july...so the apparent "bad timing" of the comments was manufactured by the cbc, not jean himself...he said what happened in september gave him reason to reflect on the opinions he was expressing...oh and fuck the alliance!
