Maybe only a year has past, but with all that's happened, it seems like a lifetime, does it not? As Perry (Robin Williams) says in The Fisher King, "find out what you are and BE that," which is exactly what you've been doing all this time: getting closer to "being" what you want (and you're doing a hell of a good job, at that!). It all starts with the difficult task of being totally honest with yourself. I think you have been, and I really hope I'll be there watching as your dreams slowly come true (because I know they will). Doing what you did to get out of that mess took a lot of balls. Not many people want to stand up for themselves - they turn a blind eye to troubles in relationships, and overstay (and are very, very sorry. Just ask me, I know all about that). You discovered what was wrong, took action, and accepted the inevitable flack that came with it. That takes a lot of guts.
And honey, never again will you have a New Year's Eve like that one. Ever. I promise. ;)
