Brenda forwarded this to me today. Devlin ("Devo") was part of our crew in high-school. He and I were on the swim team together. No-one talked to him much these past few years because he had broken his neck in a skiing accident and he didn't want anyone who had known him as an athlete to see him as a quadrapalegic.

AIKENHEAD: Devlin James passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2003 at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. Born Oct. 24, 1967 in Duncan, BC. Is survived by mother Heather Aikenhead (Doug) and late father Donald Aikenhead, brother Dean (Ann), sister Reva, niece Chanelle & nephew Koby. He will be remembered by his extended family & friends in both BC & Alberta for his strength of character, wit and courage. His many loves included travelling, rugby, swimming, skiing and time spent with friends. And should I be as annoyed as I am that the frigging Duncan paper used "you're" instead of "your" and "Devlins" instead of "Devlin's"? It's an obituary, you'd think someone could proof-read the damn thing.

How odd that the paper would say he's survived by his late father. Is completely contradictory.

Yup. That's the Cowichan News Leader for you. I hope to hell, when the time comes, that they don't foul up *my* obituary.

I think those who work on obituaries get very careless. I saw it with the local paper when we submitted my father's obituary to them. Is very unprofessional.

I'm reminded of the scene in "So I Married an Axe Murderer" where he's placing the anniversary notice and the two guys are discussing obituraries.

This same paper was equally careless with my father's obituary as well. Mind you, they are at least consistent. They are just as bad with their own articles. The Cowichan News Leader is a pretty piss-poor excuse for a newspaper.
