I had giant tinker-toys...

Here I am, about five years old, with a robot my sister and I had made. This is scanned from a seriously damaged negative that I just found in my box of old photos.

My sister and I used to make forts with them by making frames and throwing sheets over.

When I was a wee tyke of four or five, I used to have my Ticker-Toys wage a never-ending war against the Lincoln Logs. Sometimes Lego and/or Mechano would join in and take sides...

In the early years, it was more of a Hatfields vs. McCoys kind of thing - no good or bad although Lincoln Logs usually got their butt kicked. There's squat-didly that a cabin or fort can do to strike back at airborne Tinker-Toy.

Lincoln Logs' lone foray into the realm of flight ended in spectatular disaster when their "Flying Fort" crashed immediately after take-off from our back verranda.

Everything on the block changed however in 1977 when Darth Vader and his Star Wars Figures sidekicks made their first appearance.

After years of providing assorted weaponry and supplies to both sides, Lego eventually bit the bullet and united with Lincoln Logs to become the United Lincoln Lego Empire. Tinker-Toy took sides with the Rebel Alliance and provided Luke Skywalker with his first spaceships (until mom and dad bought me an X-wing fighter) whilst Mechano to the surprise of no one came under the sway of Darth Vader.

They were so fun. I remember being disappointed when I grew to the point where the sticks wouldn't support my weight anymore. Up until then I could make my own temporary monkey-bars!
