Yup. We may be closer, but the European Union is just about dead on. The Union is a collection of autonomous states sharing a common currency and certain minimal set of common "federal" laws and regulations. In terms of personal and political freedoms, Europe today is nearly exactly the "United States" set out in the Articles of Confedration.

The gradual erosion of the autonomy of the individual states in the U.S.A. has left them more provinces than states. The strong federalism and agressive imperialism the U.S. has slipped in to is more in keeping with the British Empire they revolted from.

Ah, the irony.
