So, how about the black-out, eh? Sounds like pretty much the same sort of cascading failure as 1965. One power station gets overloaded and fails. This overloads all the ones around it and they fail. It snowballs and soon everything between New York City and the hydroelectic dams near James Bay goes black. Considering how it happened again in 1977 you'd think they'd have this problem fixed by now.

Date: 2003-08-14 09:26 pm (UTC)I've been looking at photos of the city. It looks like they have generators lighting up the rink at Rockafeller Center, and apparently there is some kind of impromptu rave going on at Union Square.

Date: 2003-08-14 09:39 pm (UTC)we're doing well, thank you. the entire neighborhood was a big block party. it was amusing to hear people cheering here and there when power started to be restored. here we got power back after dusk, so probably 9:30 or so, and then everyone resumed their hermitage in the climate-controlled security of their homes. ah well, it was fun while it lasted.
you're probably more up on how things were and are being handled, since i spent most of the time outside. i know train services are totally hosed for the next 6-8 hours until they can complete inspection and repairs, and i'm fearful for those who are probably still trying to get home, to say nothing for how interesting tomorrow's morning commute is going to be.
