I damn near wore out the 45 when I was a kid. I still love this song. Who cares if it isn't Christmas?

I sure don't

People think I'm nuts too. I listen to Christmas tunes whenever I feel like it. Like last summer Jezz came home while we were having our little heat wave and I was listening to The Chipmunks “Here Comes Santa Clause.” He made some comment about wishful thinking and was it making me any cooler? :-P

I think I wore out my CD playing that one so much! Do you know if The Vince Guaraldi Trio has anything else out there? Christmas or other wise? Shit now I've started bopping in my chair..... I just know I'll have dreams with the CB soundtrack playing all night long...*shrug* could be worse. :-)

I actually got to play selections from Charlie Brown christmas this last year!

It is actually quite simple fun stuff to play - most of it repeated two and four bar runs. The Lucy & Linus theme is the best of the bunch, but the ice skating song drove me nuts because my part was in a weak key. Still, once of the better non-traditional christmas selections out there to be found; It think as the years wear on it will gain a higher place in chistmas music repatoiries. People can only listen and play Silent Night so many times...

Yup, that is a great album, no question. But the song I was talking about isn't from that. It's a one-hit-wonder from the late 1960's about the Christmas Ceasefire of 1914 using Snoopy vs. the Red Baron to tell the story.
O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!

The news had come out in the First World War
The bloody Red Baron was flying once more
The Allied command ignored all of its men
And called on Snoopy to do it again.

Wwas the night before Christmas, 40 below
When Snoopy went up in search of his foe
He spied the Red Baron, fiercely they fought
With ice on his wings Snoopy knew he was caught.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ring out from the land
Asking peace of all the world
And good will to man

The Baron had Snoopy dead in his sights
He reached for the trigger to pull it up tight
Why he didn't shoot, well, we'll never know
Or was it the bells from the village below.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man

The Baron made Snoopy fly to the Rhine
And forced him to land behind the enemy lines
Snoopy was certain that this was the end
When the Baron cried out, "Merry Christmas, my friend!"

The Baron then offered a holiday toast
And Snoopy, our hero, saluted his host
And then with a roar they were both on their way
Each knowing they'd meet on some other day.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man [repeat and fade]

Snoopy vs Richtoffen

Oh man, I forgot all about that Snoopy vs. Red Baron song!!!

When I was 5 or 6, I had a kids record by the Irish Rovers which had them singing that song. It was brilliant - at least brilliant to a 5 or 6 year-old...

Around the same time, I also had (probably still have somewhere in storage at my folks) the Viewmaster slides for Snoopy vs. the Red Baron - which told the story how Snoopy's flying doghouse got shot down and he had to sneak his way through no man's land and past German troops (which bore a distinct sillouette to Linus and Charlie Brown...) to get back to France.

Awww!

I've just been searching around lj for some other Vancouverites, and I'm reminded that this song made me cry the first, like, 100 times I heard it.

I think it was the, "Merry Christmas, my friend!" that got me...

;o)
