Whatever reaction I'm supposed to have, I'll just have the opposite one, K? Last night I was thinking about my student loan coming to an end and bummed. Today I was handed my walking papers and I'm thrilled.

I've been given an eight-month working extension (September 9th will be my last day), which if I finish it, I will get a bonus of 10% of my salary for those eight months plus a four-month severance for a total of 4.8 months pay. Basically I have 2005 covered. That is more income security than I have ever had. I consider this the last gasp of decency coming out of the old company that I was hired into. If I had been asked to stay on permanently I would have had to have moved to Vernon. This is infinitely more preferable. My vacation time will be pro-rated for the portion of the year I will be working, which gives me two weeks vacation between now and September 9th. That puts me in good stead for a week at Convergence 11 and a week in NYC some time before [livejournal.com profile] bitogoth moves to hurricane-land. I am pleased.

I wander into work about 15 minutes late, zone out for about an hour...

That's a pretty damn good deal, definitely better than anything I have ever gotten (or heard of anyone else getting, for that matter).

At least the "other shoe has dropped", so-to-speak. Sometimes, waiting for the inevitable news is the worst part of all. With your experience I am sure you will have little difficulty finding a new position.

I know. I was a bit stunned. Apparently this is "normal" for the forestry industry. It sure isn't normal for IT. The closest I've ever come to something like this was 30 days working notice.

The past year was nothing but stress. This one is definitely going to be a lot better.
