Yes, what you are seeing in the slightly gross picture to the right is a gold tooth. I've needed this work for years now. As you can see from the neighbouring teeth I already have enough metal in my mouth to make me mad as a hatter (good, old-fashioned mercury fillings - explains a few thing about my personality, eh?). This particular tooth had been filled to the point where when the filling eventually was to wear out, there would not have been enough actual tooth left to hold another filling, thus the need to drop a proton and go gold. This should, barring toffee accidents, last the rest of my life. There is about 0.2 oz. of gold in my face now. I'm horribly amused by this. I always said that when I finished paying my student loan off I would start buying gold. My last student loan payment came out yesterday...

huh.. I've never seen a close up like that. Did it hurt to have that stuff done? This coming from someone who has never had a filling in her life.

Getting the crown put on actually involves a hammer at one point, which is a bit annoying. But compared to what I remember as a kid, dentistry today is almost completely painless. These days they even apply a topical anathetic before putting in the needle. I find the routine cleaning and polishing more uncomfortable than the last two major things I've had done: this crown and a root canal in one of my front teeth.

Needing the root canal threw me. The dentist asked me if I had ever been hit in the face. I said, "No" thinking that he ment "recently", but apparently a good smack in the face (of which I had many as a kid and teenager - fists, knees, feet, soft-balls, soccer balls, falling on my face, etc.) can end up with a dying nerve and a root canal more than a decade later. Weird, huh?

And, since you are a photographer, it isn't really a close up. It's actually a close crop of telephoto shot taken from about 4' away with a really bright flash. It was the only way I could think of to illuminate the inside of my mouth.

*shutter* OMG.. I can't even imagine that!

Thanks god I was blessed by the tooth fairy.
That must have been expensive work to have done!

Expensive... Yup. That's why I put it off so long and why I got it done now. I've been handed my walking papers so it's time to milk the dental plan.

i've had three and they aren't too bad...but the first one was in the very back of my mouth and took over an hour...as if that wasn't painful enough i had an allergic reaction to the root canal which only happens occasionally...it was the absolute worse pain i've ever felt in my life...and it was all at christmas time one year...

strangely enough i tend to like the needles...same with the ones while giving blood...and the drill doesn't bother me so much either...it's more keeping your mouth wide open for so long that's painful...
