The more I look into it, the more I am liking Melbourne. It looks a lot like Vancouver, only a bit bigger and with a little less of an identity crisis. There seem to be a lot of cool old apartments downtown and the rents are a little cheaper than Vancouver. It's striking me as the bastard child of Vancouver and New York. Obviously that appeals to me.

i have also heard that. as much as i would love to visit canada... maybe we should swap apartments? LOL! depending on how much you want to spend, i am the rental QUEEN! your plans, income etc will play a role, but if you can afford it, it's worth getting your own pad.. then again, if you're travelling... you need all the stuff... there are plenty of great share places... and no, not like 'he died with a felafel in his hand' (if you've read it or seen the film)... plenty of photographers and working professional creative types in this town for sure :)

It would be my "day job" that would bring me there. It pays pretty well and [livejournal.com profile] valerian would be coming with me, so if it happens we'd be after a decent-sized (we have 2 bedrooms + den now, the computers live in the den and the extra bedroom is a studio) apartment somewhere in the $375-$475 p.w. range (that per week thing throws me - rents here are all monthly). From what I've seen so far, rents are a little cheaper than Vancouver and there are plenty of buildings with decent sized aparments that have some character to them. I'm a total apartment snob that way. I won't live in a beehive.

Moving to the other end of the earth is going to put a crimp in the momentum I've finally started to build up with my photography, but then I'll have the advantage of being able to charm people with my funny accent while I build things up again ;-)

Yes, but photography is a talent that's easy to transport. There is a scene down there as well, and who says you can't take great photos of it?! I'm liking it more and more all the time too. It's just the moving thing that would be a pain, but whatever. It wouldn't be the first time I'd packed up and moved across the planet.

Yup, I just won't be the "guy with the camera" fixture that I am now. I'll have to coerce utter strangers into letting me steal their souls. A funny accent will give me instant artistic credibility ;-p
