Date: 2005-10-19 05:39 am (UTC)But that does explain what happened to me a few years ago. After shooting a bunch of pictures on a ferry ride my camera got a little warm. Just as the cars were unloading smelled something funny. I picked up the camera and it was *extremely* warm. I presumed it was a short and promptly dumped the batteries. One of them was so hot it burned my hand and I dropped the lot. The hot one had already shrunk the plastic on the battery to the point where it was cracking and I had to knock it off the seat to keep it from melting the vinyl. I drove off the ferry hoping to hell that it wasn't going to explode before I had a change to find it on the floor and pitch it out of the car, which I managed to do at the first opportunity to pull over. At the time I figured it was just a bad battery that had somehow managed to short, but now I see that it was thermal runaway after getting the camera too warm on a summer day. Interesting.
