In Japan you are only allowed to text message on public transit because it gets so crowded that if everyone was talking on their cel phones no one would be able to hear a thing! They actually have signs posted that you are not allowed to use your phone on the train.
Same thing goes for bimbos walking down the street talking on cell phones walking into everyone... and then they give you the dirty look for being in their way! Or the people at restaurants on the cell phones ignoring the company sitting across from then at the table or talking so loud that it interrupts anyone sitting in proximity… Can you tell I HATE cell phones???
Goddess I hate that! It's the same binbos that walk out of a shop or restaurant with their posse and block teh sidewalk just as you're trying to walk by... Then they have the nerve to give you attitude when you just keep walking and ram into the lot of them. Well duh, assholes :)
I do try to pitch more quietly should a call come in when I'm on transit (or if I need to give a last-minute heads-up to someone as I'm riding to rendezvous), but I do feel somewhat self-conscious about the whole thing. Myself, I marvel how so many can just be glued to the handset as they conduct so much of their other business. Multitasking is one thing, but sweet Primus in a chicken basket, to be on the phone while taking your groceries through the checkout, I just don't get that.
And so far, I've been scrupulous about turning my phone off in theatres. It's a tool for an increasingly payphoneless world for me, not a 24/7 partyline.
Barring more widespread installation of cellphone scramblers, a cell etiquette guide is past due, it seems. Who'd be willing to write one?
