A friend who lives in faraway lands where they don't have to lock up the cheese at night and who has marvelled at my tales of the cheese-vault at the 24-hour Supervalu on Davie just sent me this story:

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver police have caught the man they believe stole items from a sick patient at Vancouver's Children's Hospital.

Yesterday, police received a call from the Safeway on Davie Street about a man stealing a large amount of cheese. The cheese culprit ended up being 39 year old Bryan John Laidlaw. A warrant had been issued for his arrest following the theft of electronic equipment last Monday from a teenager's hospital room.

He's now facing a number of charges, including theft.

cheese theft is huge...especially of the big bricks...they often sell them to the dollar pizza places...that's why it's so cheap (well one reason)...they used to come in to safeway and steal several of those bricks at a time...it was even more popular than meat theft...but most of them are pretty easy to spot when they come in...especially with their gym bag when it looks like they haven't frequented anything but a prison gym...

I've also seen cheese changing hands at the ad hoc street market in front of the bottle depot on lower Hastings.

Having been offered the massive cheese wheels while walking our fair streets, I've often wondered to whom that stuff was fenced (as opposed to stolen booze, electronics or even coffee, which seem easier to shift). Never made the buckaslice connection: thanks.

i used to wonder that too as an employee of safeway...why would people steal so much cheese??? but then someone told me that and hey it made some sense...cheese isn't cheap and at a buck a slice you have to cut corners any way you can...

The reign of terror caused by this man is over. Maybe now I can finally buy cheese and butter for my breakfast.
