I went out today to take some pictures of the fog that has descended on Vancouver for the past several days. It wasn't as successful a sojourn as I was hoping since the fog burned off today, unlike yesterday when it lingered all day. So it goes when you are counting on the weather.

Me too. It's those lamp posts. It's bizarre to think that all those towers on the left are on "land" that wasn't there 15 years ago. The right side of the street is the natural shore.

i like the little park in the first picture...it's very underutilized by the populace...it was funny yesterday...i looked out my window and there was blue sky, went outside to meet my friend and in 5 minutes the fog was back...walked to burrard station, no fog except down on burrard inlet...went to commercial drive, no fog...came back downtown and no fog but you could see it sitting offshore...within 15 minutes it was back...it has seemed to be if you are west of burrard you are in the fog a great deal more...east of burrard and especially down where you were by the marine building it has seemed to burn off more quickly...

It wasn't that long ago the backside of that little park (it's called "Portal Park" BTW) was a cliff overlooking the water. The CP "truck ferry" used to dock pretty much exactly where the Shaw Tower is now. The park is directly above where Skytrain tunnel comes out (which of course used to be the truck tunnel connecting the Coal Harbour rail-yard with the False Creek rail-yards) so there's no way to build a foundation there for a tower. The gap across the street next to the American Consulate is there for the same reason. By the other side of Pender it is deep enough underground that it isn't a problem anymore.

In the second picture, everything to the right side of the road are the buildings that used to sit on the cliff at the natural shoreline. The road and all the towers to the left are "reclaimed" land, which is why there is no decoration or entrances on that side of the Marine Building.

Whenever I get cabs into Gastown from home you can always tell the old-timers because they prefer to use Pender or Hastings, while the young guys use the new roads.

i remember the truck ferry...i remember there also used to be a ferry service that would take you on a tour of burrard inlet that docked pretty near to the cube building...it used to be an energy company back then...of course they are utilizing other parts of the rail and truck tunnels for the new canada line...my dad and his friends used to sneak through the train tunnel from 6th ave to the roundhouse way back when...i remember when all there used to be there was rail yards...and not much else...

Before reading, my first thought was that these were pictures of one of the buildings being demolished.
