funny how selective memory is, i only remember the tower one...because i was on my way to work wondering why everyone was gathered around the tv's at the td stock place...then a coworker phoned me to tell me about it...i was oblivious...i do remember going online the night lady di was killed and seeing a great deal of candle avatars in the chat rooms...
for john lennon's death i was at school, same goes for elvis...for the summit series we were watching it in the school gym, we beat those reds good (thanks to bobby clarke's vicious slash on kharlamov's ankle)...for the robson street riot i was at luvafair on klassix night and they had it on the big screen...then i walked down robson later with the comforting scent of tear gas in the air...it was strange to see all the broken windows and such...my friend went down there to check it out and saw a tear gas cloud, and of course only being used to them on tv, thought it was cool and then couldn't believe how acrid it was...ha ha...

Safe in my cozy apartment thinking "what a bunch of fuckheads" and that they really should close all the bridges into town between 11:00 pm and 4:00 am ;-)

In the living room of out house in Duncan, with my dad, watching on our gargantuan console television that took half an hour to warm up.
And I suppose I should answer my own questions:

Attending "Cow High" (Cowichan Secondary School) in Duncan. Ended up disappointed that the "0-year tradition" was broken when he didn't die. Hey... Dubya was elected in a 0-year... but I guess he's exempt because he wasn't actually elected.

Working at Radio Shack in Tillicum Mall in Victoria, facing a wall of televsions, watching it over, and over, and over...
...when Iraq bombed Israel?
This one was interesting. I was at the Western Front in a live teleconference with a guy in Jordan who was doing an end-run around the press restrictions with his own satellite uplink. We were discussing whether of not Saddam would be dumb enough to send scuds toward Israel. He had just finished saying why he didn't think it was going to happen when he suddenly announced "Holy fuck! Something just flew over!!" Twenty minutes later the CBC was announcing that Iraq had fired missles at Israel.

At home in my apartment in Fairview. I had just had a discussion with my mother (http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=mbarrick&itemid=104288) the night before about how complacient the US was and that sooner or later someone would attack them. Very much to my surprise when my clock-radio came on it was on the news. I turned on the TV and watched the second tower get hit and both of them fall. Excluding the post the bank made me delete my reactions that day are here (http://mbarrick.livejournal.com/day/2001/09/11).

I was 19. I was a sophomore in college. My mom, dad and I watched it explode live on TV. It was awful.
When Iraq bombed Israel...
The Gulf War, right? 24, watching CNN, eating rice and tomato soup (all we had left in the house), and engaged to the wrong man.
When *Princess* Di was killed...
I was 30, at Great America for the day. I came home to a message from my best friend. I was upset; I saw Di in person in once, when she came to my classroom in London years ago (1988). I was always in awe of her.

Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales - The title "princess" conferred upon her by her marriage makes no difference to her previous appelation of "Lady", which is use with a marchioness, countess, vicountess, baroness; daughter of a duke, marquis or earl; or wife of a baronet, knight, or holder of the title "Lord" as bestowed by royal courtesy. Most titles cannot be revoked, meaning that she remained a princess after the divorce, but would never be queen. There is no precedent for what would have happened if she had lived and Charles was to remarry, given that she would still hold the title, "Princess of Wales." But an example of how titles are not normally revoked, even when things are highly awkward, would the be the title "Defender of the Faith" that still applies to the English monarch. It was conferred upon Henry VIII by the Pope prior to Henry declairing himself head of the Church of England in order to annul one of his own marriages and subsequently being excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church, yet if you look on British coins you will see the initials F.D. or FID DEF after the queen's name (fidelis defensor: defender of the faith). Interestingly you won't see that on Canadian coins, though, because the title only applies to the monarch of England, not the monarch of Canada, which are two different titles and roles even though they are always held by the same person.

*when Iraq got bombed: at Mama Gold's pub. Everyone was crowded around the bar's TV. I remember Mike Reno was there but nobody paid any attention to him. Then I went home and made out with some guy named Denis.
*Diana: my boyfriend and I were watching "Warriors" and heard some yelling outside(I live in Strath, it's normal) so when we stopped the movie the news came on with live shots of the crash in the tunnel.
*the towers: I was sleeping and a friend from work called to wake me up at 6:30am because I guy I was seeing lived in Brooklyn and worked in Manhatten. At that time I didn't know how truly HUGE Manhatten was and thought the DC building was close-by...He was safe, but saw the second plane hit from the Q train going over the bridge.
*John Lennon: going through the Macdonald's drive-thru with my Mom and sister. We were kinda sad and I remember my sister saying "why couldn't it have been Barry Manilow?"
For me, the saddest famous person death was Phil Hartman.I didn't realize how much I'd liked him until he was gone.
