You must preform action D unless condition A or B or C is true. Condition A is false. Condition B is true. Condition C is false. Must you perform action D?

I met with not the landlord, but the landlord's partner and head contractor and ended arguing over the building code. Ever argued building codes with a Scottish contractor with 30+ years experience who happens to be wrong? There is just no way for that to go well.

This blasted window thing is not over yet. I'm angry and frustrated.

Umm, is no the correct answer?

Well, you could always start making "English" references to him? Such as "well, that might have gone over well where you are from in England, but not here..." that's always gone over popular with the frequent arguments I've had with Scottish people - heh heh being English myself, I never tire of cease taunting the Scots.

"Are you making that accent up - or are you just retarded?" is another crowd pleaser.

Bearing in mind that Elaine is half Scottish, would you like some ketchup with your foot?

Oh, I probably already have enough ketchup on my foot from my own Royal Scottish wife...

The part of the exchange that in retrospect I've had a couple chuckles over is this:

"I've been a building contractor for over thirty years, I know what I'm talking about."

"No, you've been wrong for thrity years."

I can't believe that came out of my mouth without hesitation.

Time to contact the City? That's what I'd do if it were happening to me down here.

We'll see what the arbitrator's ruling is, they can't do anything until then. Minimally two windows in each bedroom will open, and one in each will be able to open fully for the sake of exit, and we'll have two windows in the living room (plus the balcony door) that much I've already brokered. That's what happens if I *lose*.

I'm not going to lose.

No...because B is true.

Although I have a feeling that was in reference to what you described in the latter. ;P

Yes. It's the wording of the building by-law. Just condensing it down to the logic it says:

1. Except for as provided in (2) windows must be protected.
2. Windows don't need protection if A or B or C.
