Trust me, it's just one of many, although one of the only ones right in the central business district - most of the trees right downtown are too young. Anywhere there were bigger, older trees there was penty of damage. Stanley Park has been closed due the number of fallen trees. It's a mess all round.
Yes, it is - or was. I noticed it had been removed yesterday. BTW, that cathedral is the only building on Georgia that's older (1898) than our apartment block (1909).
The site dates from 1889 as its basement was constructed and in use quite some time before the rest of the main building went up. It underwent its first renovation the year your apartment block was built.
Actually, I'm not sure how much of the previous foundation was retained in the present building. But there has been a Anglican church on the location since 1889.
It wasn't originally built as a "cathedral" per se as the diocese's cathedra (bishop's throne) used to be located in New Westminster (and hence the hybrid name 'Christ Chruch Cathedral'). It became the diocese cathedral sometime in the late 1920s I think.
