A late 17th century saltbox of historical note in East Hampton.

A late 20th century saltbox in Sag Harbor (belonging to Elaine's Uncle Herb and his partner Brian).

So what's a saltbox?

If you aren't already, I'd suggest to you all to either disallow anonymous posting or at the very least screen all anonymous posts. This morning I got a spam anonymous comment. It read "I've added you to my friends list if you don't mind" with what appeared to be a link to a journal. The link went to a porn site.

To turn on screening:
  • Go to http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml
  • Scroll down to the "Enable Message Boards" subsection of the "Privacy Options" section.
  • Set the options to disallow or at the very least screen anonymous posts.

I'll have to read this in more detail later since I'm at work now, but I came across a site that has an interesting argument that "Vinland" could have been the Cowichan Valley. Yup, Vikings in Duncan.

Background
Navigating the Northwest Passage
Blonde Eskimoes
Viking Petroglyphs, Sails and Ships
Ships for Rooves and Cooper Plated Monsters
Weaving, Wool, and the Cowichan Sweater
Cairns, Bears, Petroglyphs, Sagas and Wine.

As I said, I haven't read it in detail, but it appears well researched, with the research well documented, and incorporates several recent Viking discoveries in the far north that I was heretofore unaware of. Fascinating stuff.
