Coming very soon to Art of Adornment - another Time Traveller's Top Hat. This one is based on a much taller "caroller's" style top-hat. I just finished it tonight and Elaine still has to get a good picture of it for the store before it's officially for sale.

Another steampunk-inspired top-hat. This is a bit more goth, though. I'm actually not a big fan of brown.

The hat itself is premium wool felt with a white satin liner. The hat-band is distressed vintage leather. The gears and clockwork are vintage brass and steel German clock parts painted with gloss-enamel rust paint.

The hands on the clock gear can be moved to any position and the spring steel "feather" has a really fun bounce to it when you move.

The hat was made for sale at Art of Adornment and as of this posting is still available here.

You may recall that I bought some gears a while back. Here is the first fruit from that crop:

The hat will be for sale in Elaine's store tomorrow. If it is well-received, there will be many more like it (but no two will ever be the same).

Each gear is hand-sewn to the hat, as it the leather hat-band, and brass "feather". The gears on the stalk of the "feather" are soldered while those at the ends are held by the wire. The hat itself is quality 100% wool felt. I'm not sure what the exact hat size is, only that Best fits heads measuring between 21 3/4 inches to 22 1/4 inches (depends how angled you wear it) - to avoid the temptation of keeping it, it is a size too small for me. Check the new items list in Elaine's store tomorrow for the details.

[EDIT] This keyboard mod was mentioned in the August 23, 2008 edition of the Sydney Morning Herald.

I finally finished that "secret project" I started exactly two months ago - a Steampunk keyboard mod.

The Process - *lots* of pictures! )

I finished the tree tonight. The orange pumpkins have blinky light emitting diodes, shown in the inset. While not show-at-the-VAG art, this was fun to make in a Martha Stewart-eque craft kind of way. Not counting the Sally globe, the materials were less than $20.

First Coat

Here's a better picture of the tree after the first coat of paint. There'll be at least one more coat (you can see some areas aren't well covered yet). I have an evening photography gig tomorrow night so I probably won't get the second coat on until Wednesday. Thursday after the second coat has cured I'll decide if a third is in order. I'm not at all sure when I am going to be able to find a few things to hang on it yet, but hopefully I'll have it done by the weekend.

[livejournal.com profile] bitogoth has this cute little wire Hallowe'en tree that I've always quite liked. It only took me just shy of five years to get around to it, but I decided to try my hand at making my own wire tree today. I haven't made anything out of wire for years. What you see here is a work-in-progress. It still needs paint and ornaments. Materials for this cost less than $10 and it was a nicely relaxing way to pass a couple hours. I'll post better pictures once it is finished.
