I'm working on the stereoscopic pictures from last week's one-day VSteam (Vancouver Steampunk) mini-con at Barclay Manor to be posted on Gothic BC.

If you are viewing this on facebook go to the original post to see the animation since facebook does not support it.

Last Saturday I went thrift-store shopping with Elaine and her mom with the intent of buying something to wear to the upcoming Sanctuary White Party. I failed to find anything to wear, but I did happen upon and old cherry-switch keyboard for only $3.50. There aren't many places out there still making cherry-switch keyboards (where each key is an independent switch - most keyboards are made from cheap, one-piece membrane), and they cost at least $80 CAD. Vintage ones sell on eBay for $70 - $130. So, score!

It was an "AT" keyboard with a 5-pin DIN connector so it was a snap to convert to PS/2 (and active PS/2 to USB adaptors that don't need drivers can be had for about $20).

I've got a bag of buttons ready and all the other things I need. Time to have a little fun.

Here's some better pictures of my latest hat, as it appears at Art of Adornment.

Coming very soon to Art of Adornment - another Time Traveller's Top Hat. This one is based on a much taller "caroller's" style top-hat. I just finished it tonight and Elaine still has to get a good picture of it for the store before it's officially for sale.

Another steampunk-inspired top-hat. This is a bit more goth, though. I'm actually not a big fan of brown.

The hat itself is premium wool felt with a white satin liner. The hat-band is distressed vintage leather. The gears and clockwork are vintage brass and steel German clock parts painted with gloss-enamel rust paint.

The hands on the clock gear can be moved to any position and the spring steel "feather" has a really fun bounce to it when you move.

The hat was made for sale at Art of Adornment and as of this posting is still available here.

My second steampunk top-hat for Elaine's store. This one is a larger size than the earlier one, the inside circumference is about 24 inches (61cm), equivalent to a USA 7 5/8 or UK 7 1/2. Best fits heads measuring between 23 3/4 inches to 24 1/4 inches (depends how angled you wear it). If that is a bit too big, Elaine sells hat foam that can be inserted to reduce the size up to one inch (three hat sizes).

You may recall that I bought some gears a while back. Here is the first fruit from that crop:

The hat will be for sale in Elaine's store tomorrow. If it is well-received, there will be many more like it (but no two will ever be the same).

Each gear is hand-sewn to the hat, as it the leather hat-band, and brass "feather". The gears on the stalk of the "feather" are soldered while those at the ends are held by the wire. The hat itself is quality 100% wool felt. I'm not sure what the exact hat size is, only that Best fits heads measuring between 21 3/4 inches to 22 1/4 inches (depends how angled you wear it) - to avoid the temptation of keeping it, it is a size too small for me. Check the new items list in Elaine's store tomorrow for the details.

The early stages of the fourth Red Chair painting. This a very poor quality photo so a lot of the nuance of the colours is lost.

A few bits and bobs for my next steampunk project. I'm not saying what it is yet other than it will be a product for Elaine's store, Art of Adornment.

[EDIT] This keyboard mod was mentioned in the August 23, 2008 edition of the Sydney Morning Herald.

I finally finished that "secret project" I started exactly two months ago - a Steampunk keyboard mod.

The Process - *lots* of pictures! )
