First off, happy new year, blah, blah, blah, [insert navel-gazing year-in-review/big-plans-for-2008 post here]. There, that's done.

At the moment I'm working on some post-relaunch tweaks for Gothic BC and was looking at the logs. In between the people who think I get up at 6:00 a.m. after getting in from the club at 5:00 a.m. and am going to magically download and catalogue 400 photos off my camera, weed through them for the 150 or so worth posting, processes them, and have them posted on the site by 6:15 a.m. (reality: I got up about an hour ago and the camera is still in the bag) who are already scouring the site for last night's pictures, there are a gazillion hits from someone crawling the site for video content with a VEOH client.

This is uncool. First off, there is no video content on Gothic BC, nor will there be for some time to come, if ever. Secondly, as I understand it VEOH is effectively a P2P service which would mean I could potentially have dozens of these clients crawling the site effectively amounting to, given my limited bandwidth, a DDoS attack. No thanks.

Apache rewrite module to the rescue:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} veoh [NC]
RewriteRule .* http://www.veoh.com/ [F,L]

Translation for those that don't speak Apache )

Of course, the "nice" thing to do would be to issue a "503 forbidden" response and just let the request die, but what VEOH is doing isn't nice. They are using a distributed network to download video off other people's sites, thereby decontextualising it from authors, who in the case of video-bloggers may be relying on the page context to serve up their advertising or other content that represents their income stream. VEOH then presents the content on their own page, with their own advertising, and makes their own money that the authors of the video content never see one red cent of. They deserve to be hoisted on their own petard.

I am going to do paint. I am not going to waste many, many hours installing a Jabber daemon to add live chat to Gothic BC for no good reason other than a whim to fool with it.

Must...  resist... geeking... out...

Fer fuck's sake. In addition to the lame-o virus thing I noticed a crapload of (failed) DoS attacks against my webserver. Sorry, script-kiddies, if you want to find a vulnerable webserver, go attack a bank.

Some idiot in California mailed me a virus amateurishly disguised as a zip file of photos for the Gothic BC site. This is what I have to contend with. Fortunately I'm not an idiot. But really, this is the kind of thing I was bitching about the other day. Somebody tell me again why I should bother?

I feel odd

While on the one hand I am very pleased that the weather has taken a change for the better (i.e. darker, wetter, colder) I'm also less than thrilled with the oppressive Mondayness of the day not to mention a few other annoyances.

Someone is griping at me because I haven't gotten around to updating someone's name on the Gothic BC website. I have half a mind to take it down just because it isn't fun anymore. *sigh* If you do nothing no one notices you and no one complains. It's not that I haven't had complements on the site, some people do appreciate what I have done, but there are just too many people that confuse complaining about everything with actually having opinions.

Of course the solution is simple. I don't owe anyone any apologies for what I've created. I'm not doing this for money or for popularity, it's just for fun.

There are other things going on that have me bummed as well. Funny how there is always something. Money is finally sorting itself out (albeit not quite fast enough - I'm not going to be able to afford travel and lodging for C7). But one whinge at a time...

I recalled today a trend I encountered at my last job with regular hours. It seems that the more foul my mood is in the morning, the better the day I end up having. I was in the mood to bit the heads off live puppies this morning, mostly because of being off-kilter from the weird hours yesterday, the heat, and my ongoing money glitches. I walked under the bridge again today to avoid the sun, but because it was later in the day the parade of SUV driving, pedestrian-oblivious, ladies-who-lunch had already begun and it wasn't as pleasant as yesterday morning. Still better than going over the bridge, though. I shall have to buy a monthly pass for the ferries next month since I'm taking them in both directions now.

Anyway, I tromped and scowled my way through town, itching for car to cut me off so I could yell, "I'm walking here!" But didn't get the opportunity.

Tharsis
Tharsis. He has an owie in his right ear, but it is getting better.
Work started a bit stressfully since one of my scheduled programs didn't run last night and there were a few complaints. But then we had our usual Thursday morning meeting and I got some quality doodling time. The broken scheduled agent gave me something to do for a while.

But the best thing to happen today was I scooped another personal client from my former employer. It's another small website that I can host which won't create much bandwidth but will help pay for the line. This is good. This subsidizes my pet projects, which of course is the only reason I maintain the server. I'm going to have to feed some money into the server before the fall. The hardware need some upgrading since the whole box is about a year and half old now. I'll need to make a major software purchase in January as well.

Anyway, enough geek shit. I just love the fact that after a year and a half these idiots were never able to replace me and I am picking up their old clients. And, as a final twist of the knife, I am actually making what I always told them I was worth (too bad I am so far in the hole, but that will change with time). Yes, I hold grudges. You would too if someone tried to screw you for $11,000. Revenge is good, sayeth me.

And just as a capper I picked up my photos from last Sunday and some of them turned out really neato. I'll be posting them on Gothic BC soonerest. This picture of Tharsis was the "don't know if the film is wound over enough for the first picture to turn out" picture.

Apparently the student loan people received the money and it hasn't been returned. They've ripped me off for $500. Isn't that just lovely. The bank has contacted them directly to get the money back. Meanwhile I still have enough money for rent, but nothing else.

And as a fun little sideline my ISP has fucked up as well. I was charged waaaay to much for my ADSL line. At first glance I thought I was being surcharged for bandwith but when I checked the fee schedule I realised that there's no way I would have come close to my allotment, let alone have gone over it enough to warrant the charges. I looked into it a bit and it turned out I was being surcharged for uploading a small webpage to my personal directory to monitor my servers. The FTP calls were being logged as dial-up calls that I was billed for.
